Self publishing is an increasingly common and straightforward route for an author to bring their book into reality. But in order to find success, authors need to plan from a business perspective.

With the vast emotional energy invested in writing a book, is it surprising that some make their publishing decisions based more on those emotions than sound business and financial judgement.

In his latest article and accompanying video post Budget your Book Publishing Process, Morris Rosenthal discusses the need for financial planning and budgeting when approaching self publishing as a means of getting a book realised in print.

Morris stresses that authors who blow their budget on the cover design, or just one other piece in the self publishing jigsaw, only have themselves to blame. A little harsh perhaps, but essentially true. Authors are sometimes desperate to have a complete, printed book in their hands, and may overlook the necessities of project management, business based decision making, and, of course, proper budgeting. Self publishing is a business and everyone an author is going to deal with during that process are themselves treating it as a business. Contracts, formal agreements, and all manner of paperwork, clutter the way ahead, but they are essential in ensuring the author gets the end result they are seeking.
