India has a growing international presence in a number of areas, at the top of which might be the Bollywood phenomena. But that does not seem to be trickling down into other creative areas.

Indian publishing is still very much behind the times and it seems not for the lack of writing talent. John P. Matthew writes of the dire state of the Indian publishing industry. He sites four areas in which is is in need of repair:

  • Lack of editors
  • Low quality printing
  • Poor author development
  • Weak publicity

There is some clear passion in John’s post. A positive outlook for the potential of Indian writers, but a frustration at the infrastructure failing to offer them a means to reach a global audience. Perhaps the Indian publishing industry should take a look at how Bollywood has created itself a unique and very successful space in world cinema, there must be a few good lessons to learn.
